Japanese is an an East Asian language that is the national language of Japan.
It belongs to the Japonic (Japanese- Ryukyuan) language family, whose relationships to
other language families are subject for question. These relationships include those with
Korean and the proposed Altaic language family.
Japanese has no genetic relationship with Chinese, but it makes extensive use of Chinese characters,
or kanji , in its writing system, and a large portion of its vocabulary is borrowed from Chinese.
The two syllabic (or moraic) scripts used most commonly in the Japanese writing system are hiragana
and katakana, in addition to kanji.
Latin script employed, and Arabic numbers predominate alongside conventional Chinese numerals in
the numeral system.
